News & Upcoming Events:

February Meeting:  Progressive Cheverly's monthly general meeting is Thursday, February 4th.  Our topic this evening is Maryland Government - By the People with guest Ryan O'Donnell, the Executive Director of Common Cause Maryland, providing an update on the initiatives to curb campaign financing practices that may improperly influence Maryland legislation.  Ryan will also discuss the current efforts to make the proceeding of the General Assembly more transparent.

The meeting begins at 7:00 pm in the Judith Hoyer Early Childhood Learning Center, second floor, 2300 Belleview Avenue, Cheverly.  All area residents are welcome to attend.

March Meeting:  2010 is an important election year in Maryland.  Our March meeting will focus on the elected offices being contested, the candidates involved and the tools available to the voter to make an informed decision at the polls.  The March meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March 4th at 7:00 pm in the Judith Hoyer Early Childhood Learning Center, second floor, 2300 Belleview Avenue, Cheverly.  All area residents are welcome to attend.

News: Gwendolyn T. Britt Award  At the June General Meeting, members of Progressive Cheverly voted to institute the Gwendolyn T. Britt Award as a means to foster and support an individual or group working to advance the goals and principles outlined in Progressive Cheverly's mission statement.  For more information about the Britt Awards, please click here.

Progressive Cheverly for National Health Action:  Progressive Cheverly is supporting broad-based coalition effort to press Congress on pro-consumer elements in national health reform coordinated by Health Care for America Now.  HCAN is actively organizing in Maryland with the hopes that thousands of Marylanders will come out to demand that Congress pass a health care reform bill that guarantees quality, affordable, and comprehensive health care for everyone.  We have to let Congress know that we want health care for all.  Progressive Cheverly has decided to join HCAN and do what we can to help mobilize our area of Prince George’s County.  We are hoping that you will join to send a powerful message to Congress that we expect them to pass a health care reform bill that includes a public health insurance option that is available to anyone without coverage or who wishes to switch from their current plan.  You can find out more about HCAN, their principles, and their action on their web site: www.healthcareforamericanow.org. To help Progressive Cheverly get the word out, contact Greg Teasley tteasley1@verizon.net.

Membership Survey Results: At the end of 2009, Progressive Cheverly conducted a poll of its members to determine the organization's priorities as we moved into the new year.  Click here for membership survey results.

Recent Policy Positions: Representing the voice of our membership, Progressive Cheverly has sent letters to our elected officials and delivered testimony before the General Assembly on a variety of policy issues.  Click here to see our current correspondence.

Keep our Care Coalition: In October 2008 Progressive Cheverly joined the Keep our Care Coalition targeted at the imminent sale of the Prince George's Healthcare System to a private healthcare system. The coalition wants to ensure that in the rush to privatize, current healthcare services are protected and enhanced. Specifically, the coalition is insisting that any successful bidder ensure full access to comprehensive reproductive healthcare services, work to eliminate health disparities due to race, gender and other factors, and commit to providing high quality healthcare services to uninsured and underinsured populations. The coalition has testified at Hospital Authority meetings, sent a letter outlining these positions and is delivering 1,000 signatures on a petition. (more info: http://www.aclu-nca.org/)

Green Jobs Now Day of Action: Progressive Cheverly, along with Radiant Valley Civic Association, Community Forklift and Greenmodeling (two local, green businesses), the Mayor of Edmonston, Adam Ortiz, State Senator David Harrington, the Chesapeake Climate Action Network, and Jwanzaa Youth Partnership participated in “READY for Green Jobs Now!”  We identified a family who needed to decrease their energy bills and performed an energy audit, and helped the homeowner to increase their home's energy efficiency by doing a home energy efficiency makeover.  For more information on our project, visit this Treehugger article.  For more information about the National Day of Action, see http://www.greenjobsnow.com/.

2008 Membership Retreat  In June, Progressive Cheverly held a membership retreat to lay the groundwork for the organization's near-term and long-term goals.  Click here to read a report of this program.
